"Vegetarians' cancer risk is lower than meat eaters'"

01 Jul 2009

The risk of developing some types of cancer may be reduced by a meat-free diet, according to a study by scientists at Cancer Research UK. In a sample of more than 61,000 people, monitored over 12 years, the vegetarians turned out to be at 12 per cent less risk overall than the meat eaters. The results, published in the British Journal of Cancer, show that in the case of leukaemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the vegetarians’ risk was 45 per cent lower than meat eaters’. People who eat fish but no meat also have a “significantly lower” chance of developing many cancers.
